American Samoa oil spill gets worse

4:12 pm on 1 November 2002

The US Coast Guard says an oil spill in American Samoa's Pago Pago harbour is worse than initially thought.

Coast Guard spokesman Lt Derek Dostie says they are now estimating around four thousand litres of diesel fuel has been spilt, not 600 litres as first thought.

He says new pockets of very thick fuel have accumulated at the main dock since last evening.

Lt Dostie says the spill may have occurred as a vessel was taking on fuel, or from a tank overflow or from a boat with a broken tank.

Two local companies have been hired to clean up the spill and so far it has been largely contained to the main dock area.
