The Solomon Islands Red Cross estimates around 1500 people are in need of emergency food supplies on Guadalcanal's remote Weather Coast.

Last week the Prime Minister Sir Allen Kemakeza called for help for several thousand people caught up in the police effort to capture rebel leader Harold Keke.

A Red Cross spokespersonn, Ella Kauhue, says five of their workers have now returned from the Weather Coast where they distributed over two hundred family kits, which include basic essentials.

She says they have assisted nine hundred people in total, and believe around 15 hundred need help, particularly with food.

"their gardens have been uprooted by the militants and also the areas where the gardens are, the police are under going operations in those areas, so it is difficult for people to go to their gardens."
