Run-off election in American Samoa for seat in US Congress

4:44 pm on 7 November 2002

American Samoa's member of the US Congress, Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin, faces candidate Fagafaga Daniel Langkilde in a special election in two weeks after no candidate received the required 50 per cent plus one vote in the territory's three-way congressional race.

Unofficial figures give Faleomavaega just over 41 per cent of the vote, while Fagafaga received just over 32 per cent and third candidate Aumua Amata Coleman 26 and a half per cent.

The committee to elect Aumua is meeting today to decide if it will endorse one of the two highest polling candidates who will face the voters again on November 19th.
