Customs officers in Fiji strike over use of surveillance cameras

11:17 am on 8 November 2002

The security threat at Fiji's Nadi International Airport is reported to have increased after customs officers staged a lightning strike, leaving the country's main gateway unprotected.

The officers walked off the job late yesterday to protest the installation of security cameras in the customs hall through which all incoming passengers pass.

A spokesman for the striking workers says they will not return to work until the cameras are removed.

He says Airports Fiji Ltd, is using the cameras to spy on them instead of keeping a watch on incoming passengers.

Talks with the company failed yesterday.

Meanwhile, thousands of airline passengers continue to enter the country withoit adequate checks.
