Alleged killer of New Zealander Kevin O'Brien appears in court

8:49 am on 9 November 2002

The trial of a Malaitan man charged with the murder of New Zealander, Kevin O'Brien, has begun in the Solomon Islands High Court.

Lawyers for Uriel Buarafi, who is accused of stabbing O'Brien to death earlier this year, spent yesterday presenting arguments seeking to have the charge reduced to manslaughter, claiming diminished responsibility on the grounds of provocation.

The trial, which observers say is crucial to current efforts to restore law and order in the country, has been adjourned until next Wednesday.
