New Caledonia campaign to improve security in Noumea

6:24 pm on 12 November 2002

Police and top authorities in New Caledonia have made a high profile public appearance over the weekend as part of a campaign to improve security in Noumea.

Local media reports say 22 police were deployed along a popular water-front boulevard in a bid to check vehicles for making excessive noise.

Supported by the mayor, Jean Leques, the public prosecutor and a top official from the French high commission, the authorities want to show that they are aware of the increase in unruly behaviour in town and are that police will reclaim ground.

Police checked several vehicle and motorbikes to see whether they complied with legal noise limits.
