6:22 pm on 12 November 2002

The Solomon Islands police minister is shortly expected to report to cabinet about his trip to Wellington where he held talks with New Zealand officials.

The minister Augustine Taneko and his secretary, Frank Firimola, are reportedly pleased with the outcome of the talks which came after New Zealand sent officers to help strengthen the Solomon Islands police.

George Atkin reports that the discussions looked at where New Zealand police can assist.

"Mr Firimola says Mr Taneko is heartened by the New Zealand government's genuine desire to help Solomon Islands overcome its law and order problems and to help in the police restrengthening and reform project. He says Mr Taneko will soon brief cabinet about his talks with Mr Goff and other New Zealand authorities before he releases a detailed statement to the media."
