Fiji prepares rebate scheme for film industry

11:14 am on 26 November 2002

The Fiji government has prepared a tax rebate scheme to attract film and television production into the country.

This has been announced by the minister for commerce and business development, Tomasi Vuetilovoni.

The chairman of the Fiji Audio-Visual Commission, Joe Mar, says such incentives must be non-ambiguous, transparent, predictable and simple to use.

Mr Mar says growth in the economy can be significantly enhanced by the setting up of the audio-visual industry.

He says the audio-visual industry has the potential in the next few years to match the sugar industry in terms of GDP share and employment generation.

The tax rebate move comes as work is about to begin on a 500-million US dollar Studio City in north-western Viti Levu.
