Disaster conference in New Zealand next week

4:43 pm on 29 November 2002

The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is to host discussions next week on natural disasters in the Pacific and how best to respond to them.

The meeting will be attended by officials from France, Australia and New Zealand.

The three countries agreed 10 years ago to cooperate when responding to cyclones and other disasters in the South Pacific.

The FRANZ agreement provides Pacific Island governments with an assurance that outside help will be available should a natural disaster strike, and that it will be effectively co-ordinated.
