The secretary-general of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, Noel Levi, has welcomed the election of a new government in New Caledonia.

Mr Levi congratulated Pierre Frogier on his re-election as president, following the collapse of the previous government in the French territory, two weeks ago.

He says the New Caledonia Congress has shown how the rule of law remains a cornerstone of political development in the territory.

Mr Levi also says the region is looking for an assurance from all parties that the spirit of partnership, as outlined in the Noumea Accord, will be a key feature of the new government.
