Solomons police smash ministry office over pay delay

11:21 am on 5 December 2002

Several Solomon Islands police officers have smashed the office of the police ministry in Honiara in an apparent response to a pay dispute.

Inspector Lazarus Taki says the officers also broke all the windows of a vehicle parked outside the building.

The deputy police commissioner, Wilfred Akao, says the officers vented their anger at the non-payment of their salaries and allowances.

Meanwhile, the Senior Police Officers Association has given the government until tonight to pay its members or they will go on strike.

The Association wants the government to pay two outstanding salaries.
