Cash-strapped Mt Hagen hospital on the verge of closing

7:29 pm on 5 December 2002

Mt Hagen General Hospital in Papua New Guinea is on the verge of closing unless much needed operational funds are made immediately available by the government.

Hospital chief executive officer, Dr James Kintwa says the hospital, operating on a thirty thousand US dollars allocation per month but owed one hundred thousand dollars by the Treasury Department, may close in less than two weeks as it only has 500 dollars in its coffers right now.

The delay in the disbursement of the grant has forced Dr Kintwa to make an urgent call on all business houses in Western Highlands Province for donations to assist until the funds are released.
