Attempt to have mistrial declared in Fiji treason case

4:48 pm on 6 December 2002

State prosecutors in Fiji are seeking name suppression in the Misprision of Treason trial against the nationalist Viliame Savu.

The request follows publication of a statement by Savu that two coup accomplices, Timoci Silatolu and Josefa Nata, were present at the final briefing about the coup in the SVT party's office before it was carried out.

Defence lawyers for Silatolu and Nata, who are facing a separate treason trial, have raised their concern about how this would affect their clients case and are seeking a mistrial.

Meanwhile, Silatolu and Nata's trial continued today with Labour Party senator Atu Bain telling the High Court that she was terrified when told on the night of May 20th, 2000, that there would be a military assault on parliament where they were held captive.

Ms Bain says people who came into the room while she was locked up included Sitiveni Rabuka, Ratu Tuakitau Cokanauto of the Fijian Association Party, the SVT leader Ratu Inoke Kubuabola and former Methodist Church president, Dr Ilaitia Tuwere.

She says George Speight told her that if she saw the President, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, she should ask him to step down.
