Victims of human rights violations during the Fiji coup are entitled to sue the government and relevant authorities for redress.
The Daily Post newspaper says this has been disclosed by Fiji's ombudsman and chairman of the human rights commission, Sailosi Kepa.
Mr Kepa says the commission recorded numerous human rights violations during the coup and the illegal events that followed.
He says anyone who suffered any form of violation is entitled to apply for redress, meaning compensation as assessed by the courts.
Mr Kepa says this area of law is not used a lot in Fiji which is surprising given that allegations of brutality and breaches of rights by authorities is very prominent in daily conversations and frequently in the media.
He says the human rights commission can provide assistance in arguing cases involving violations of rights.
