The Samon government has given approval to Salelologa wharf on Savaii island to be used as an international port.

The American Samoa Inter Island Company says this is the final step required for it to be able to launch services from American Samoa's Tutuila island to Savaii.

The company says the vessel planned to be used for the route, the Manuatele, has been cleared by the US coast guard for international voyages.

The first sailing to Savaii is scheduled for Wednesday in time for the Christmas rush of Samoans wanting to return home for the holiday season.
