The Niue government has announced that it has signed an agreement with Reef Shipping Limited for it to provide a regular and exclusive shipping service to New Zealand from the beginning of next month.
Niue's shipping minister, Vakaafi Motufoou, says under the deal sailings will be every 23 to 30 days, with freight costs for the next twelve months to be cut by 6 percent.
A Niue government statement says the exclusivity clause only applies to services to New Zealand and will leave it open for other companies to connect Niue with other destinations.
The regular service is hoped to boost taro exports to New Zealand.
This year, Niue arranged a new regular air service to Auckland following an agreement with Samoa's carrier, Polynesian Airlines.
