Fiji Prime Minister wants zero tolerance of corruption

5:42 pm on 16 December 2002

Fiji's prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, has urged senior public servants to pledge themselves to a policy of zero tolerance of corruption and other forms of abuse.

Mr Qarase says far too often people see media revelations of corruption, and abuse of position and authority in the public service.

He says this tarnishes the image of the public service and erodes public confidence in it.

Mr Qarase, who is the minister in charge of the publc service, has commended the plan to set up an in-house anti-corrpution unit by the public service commission.

He says he is keen to see the development of an ethical culture in the public service which will lead to a reduced likelihood of financial loss, damaged reputation and low morale.
