American Samoan governor questions benefit of garment factory plan

6:58 am on 20 December 2002

American Samoa's governor, Tauese Sunia, says a proposal by a New York-based company, Kansha Incorporated, to set up a garment factory in the territory is not in the best interest of the government.

Tauese wrote to the president of Kansha, Morgan Cooper, saying the company's offer to pay 25 cents per square foot for a lease of a government property is insufficient.

This comes after Kansha had won the bid to use the now vacant Daewoosa Samoa garment factory.

Tauese says under Kansha's offer the government won't get anything out of the building already in place.
