Dozens of Marshall Islanders receive eye treatment from visiting Israeli doctors

More than a hundred Marshall Islanders have received eye surgery and laser treatment from two Israeli eye specialists who have spent eight days working in Majuro.

The hospital administrator in Majuro, Sandy Alfred, said the team carried out 54 surgical operations in the week they were there.

Many Marshall Islanders have serious eye problems connected with the widespread incidence of diabetes.

An estimated 30 per cent of the poulation is diabetic.

Both of the eye specialists are based in Jerusalem and were provided by the Israeli government as part of ongoing medical support to the Marshall Islands.
