Fiji police investigate marriages of convenience

10:26 am on 1 February 2003

Fiji police are probing a scam in which Asian businessmen are reported to be entering into marriages of convenience with local women to gain citizenship.

The assistant commissioner of police, Emosi Venusa, has told Fiji TV that the investigations started after complaints filed by the office of the registrar general.

One of the cases involves an Asian garment factory owner who threatened an employee into marrying him even though he was already married.

In other cases, prostitutes are being paid for marriages of convenience.

No arrests have been made so far.
