Fiji government meets over sacking of bank boss

The Fiji government held a top level meeting this morning to discuss the surprise sacking of the manageing director of the state owned Fiji Development Bank, Isoa Kaloumaira.

Radio Fiji says the prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, met the finance minister, Ratu Jone Kubuabola, and the attorney general, Qoriniasi Bale, over the issue.

The radio says both Mr Qarase and Ratu Jone were surprised that the chairman of the bank's boards Navitalai Naisoro, did not have the courtesy to inform them of the sacking decision.

Mr Qarase is quoted as saying that the finance minister will investigate the issue.

In announcing the sacking, Mr Naisoro said Mr Kaloumaira was not the person ot drive the development agenda of the bank.

Mr Kaloumaira was groomed for the position by Mr Qarase who was the managing director ofthe Fiji Development Bank until 1997 when he left for the private sector.
