Latest reports from the Fiji weather office place Cyclone Dovi about 250 miles north-west of Palmerston in the Cook Islands group and about 480 kilometres north-east of Niue.
Close to its centre, the cyclone has average winds estimated at 185 kilometres an hour, gusting at 250 kilometres an hour
Damaging gale force winds or stronger are expected to affect both Palmerston and Niue.
