11:29 am on 13 February 2003

The Solomon Islands opposition has called on the the Minister for Justice, Michael Maina, to resign after accusing him of what it calls dirty dealing.

The opposition spokesperson for Civil Aviation, Peter Boyers, says the minister, who is also chairman of the national carrier Solomon Airlines, was trying to sell the airline to a business in which he has an interest.

Earlier Mr Maina as chairman of the Solomon Airlines board sacked the general manager, taking on the post himself.

Mr Boyers says Mr Maina should resign from both positions or the prime minister should remove him and appoint neutral people to take over.
