Solomons peace council suspends participation in workshops

The Solomon Islands National Peace council is suspending its participation in the UNDP sponsored workshops until it knows the motives behind the killing of Sir Frederick Soaki.

Sir Frederick, a former police commissioner, and current peace councillor, was shot in a restaurant in Auki nine days ago.

The council's chairman, Paul Tovua, says they've told the 11 councillors not to travel around the country or overseas and field monitors are being warned to keep a low profile.

"When in doubt, I mean we should not pretend we are heroes, because we go on monitoring in the field, unarmed..... I think this time we feel that we should lay low until we know what's behind the killing."

Mr Tovua says four field monitors in Auki are to be moved to other areas in Malaita.
