Fiji Pm rejects Labour motion to probe Ami aid distribution

4:39 pm on 21 February 2003

Fiji's prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, has hit out at a Labour Party motion in parliament seeking an independent inquiry into the distribution of relief supplies after Cyclone Ami.

In seeking the inquiry, Labour MP Krishna Datt said there was favouritism in the distribution of cyclone relief supplies which was done along ethnic lines.

Mr Datt said the Indo-Fijian community around Labasa felt discriminated against when truckloads of supplies ignored them and headed into the interior where only indigenous Fijians live.

He said when supplies were distributed in villages near Labasa, individual Indian homes nearby were left out.

Mr Datt sid the prime minister's statement soon after the cyclone that there was minimal damage to Labasa brought gasps of shock to the people there.

But Mr Qarase told parliament today that the demands of the other side were being met by the government within its resources.

Mr Qarase said the real motive of the Labour Party motion was to discredit the government and public servants who have worked tirelessly.

He said the motion was designed to score political points and was unnecessary and irrelevant.
