Sexual assault charges again Pitcairn men to be laid next month

5:14 pm on 26 February 2003

Charges are to be laid next month against men accused of sexually assaulting girls living on the remote Pitcairn Island.

The island's public prosecutor - Auckland-based lawyer Simon Moore - is refusing to confirm how many men will be charged, saying he wants people living on the island to be the first to know.

He says not all the men who will be charged are still living on the island.

Some now reside in New Zealand.

Mr Moore says the trials could be held in either New Zealand or on Pitcairn Island.

Investigations into sexual assault allegations on the island began in 1997.
