8:16 am on 27 February 2003

The investigation into the murder of Solomon Islands peace councillor, Sir Frederick Soaki is reported to be at a standstill.

Reliable sources from Auki say several poice officers in the Malaitan capital fear for their own safety and are not cooperating with the inquiry.

Officers sent to the town to monitor and help in the investigation are still on the ground with no arrests yet.

Nor have they taken in anyone for questioning.

It's understood a police officer who is being sought for questioning over the murder has disappeared from his post in Auki.

Meanwhile, another group of senior police officers is expected to arrive in the Malaitan capital today to help in the investigation.
