New Zealand MP wants to rally support for banned Tongan paper

5:29 pm on 3 March 2003

The New Zealand Green Party says New Zealanders and the New Zealand Government should speak out about the ban on the importing of the Taimi O Tonga newspaper into Tonga.

The party's Foreign Affairs spokesman Keith Locke says if the ban stay in place it will form a big road block in the way of democracy in Tonga.

He says the ban has nothing to do with the Tongan Government's stated concerns about the paper.

"I think the reason is the growing support in Tonga for the democracy movement which they want to stem by banning the most popular pro-democracy paper and the platform for dissenting views"
