Security Forces step up for Southern Highlands elections

9:43 am on 4 March 2003

Any threat to the supplementary elections in Papua New Guinea's Southern Highlands will be met with force, according to a warning from chief of operations and Deputy Police Commissioner Gari Baki.

Mr Baki says more than 2000 security force members, including police, defence and correctional services personnel, would be deployed over three stages for the elections.

Police intelligence has identified certain areas as possible trouble spots and Mr Baki says the security force will be given specific directions to deal with anything that might arise during the elections.
