UN to establish Peace Office in Solomon Islands

10:49 am on 4 March 2003

The United Nations Security Council is reported to have agreed to set up a Peace Office in Solomon Islands.

A foreign affairs spokesman in Honiara says the size of the UN team is yet to be announced but it is expected to consist of two people.

The UN decision is in response to a request to the Security Council presented last year by the prime minister, Sir Allen Kemakeze.

The UN already has a presence in Honiara with the establishment of a branch of the United Nations Development Programme last year.
