Calls in American Samoa for non US tuna boats to pay an additional tax

5:23 pm on 5 March 2003

The President of the American Samoan Senate, Lutu T Fuimoana, has proposed a 20 percent tax on light tuna meat landed by non US vessels.

Lutu says the Government urgently needs revenue to improve the general economic condition of the territory and the levy would help.

Albacore, yellow fin and skipjack are considered light tuna meat.

50 percent of the money collected from the proposed stax would go to the Fono's general fund with the rest allocated for the reconstruction and renovation of the Fono building.

Similar taxes have been suggested in the past, but rejected by the House of Representatives.
