The president of Nauru is said to remain in a critical condition in an American hospital after collapsing while on official business.

Bernard Dowiyogo, who is 57, is in the intensive care unit of the George Washington University Hospital after undergoing a heart operation last week.

Mr Dowiyogo has been a diabetic for 30 years and had heart by-pass surgery two years ago.

He is serving as president of the tiny pacific nation the sixth time, after first being elected in 1976.
