Solomon Islands police to review operation to capture rebel Harold Keke

4:58 pm on 12 March 2003

The Solomon Islands police force is to review its operation to capture Weathercoast rebel warlord, Harold Keke.

The police commissioner, William Morrell, says conditions are tough for the team on the Weather coast.

One policeman died on the weekend as a result of pneumonia and malaria and arrangements are being made to bring back two other officers who are ill.

Mr Morrell says at the present time, the feeling is that the police still need to be there.

"It's a very very difficult area to operate in and it's trying to balance how much resources we put into that.... particularly of course the logistical difficulties we're currently facing in terms of equipment and resources but also we have to make a balance on how useful our presence over there actually is, and the alternative argument is to say that if we are not there then some of the villagers over there would suffer."
