UNDP says demobilisation of Solomons special constables going well

10:10 am on 15 March 2003

The United Nations Development programme says it has almost completed its programme of demobilising more than 800 Solomon Islands special constables.

So far 692 of those identified for the programme have signed up and will enter civilian life after being on the government pay roll.

The constables, who are mainly former militants from the ethnic conflict and coup of three years ago, had become a major cost to the government.

About 50 constables in the Honiara area are yet to sign up and the programme has been suspended in Malaita after the assassination of Sir Frederick Soaki
