Two thousand march for peace in Samoa

10:35 am on 17 March 2003

Some two thousand people took part in a peace march in Samoa over the weekend.

The demonstration heard that Samoa remained committed to cooperative multilateral action within the United Nations framework to solve what the Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sailele, called the Iraq problem.

Tuilaepa told the marchers that any action must be undertaken with the full authority of the UN Security Council.

He said that position was declared last year and remained the most appropriate for Samoa.

Many of those taking part in the demonstration were children from Catholic schools.
