Fiji's PM says Fijians should not fear the possiblity of Labour being part of government

10:31 am on 17 March 2003

Fiji's Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase, says the possible inclusion of the Labour Party into his government should not be cause for alarm for the indigenous people.

Mr Qarase says this is because it would not affect any of the SDL government's policies for Fijians.

Mr Qarase says if the state wins its appeal against the Labour Party's inclusion into the cabinet, the government will carry on as before.

But, he says, if the Labour Party wins, the government will still hold a two thirds majority in parliament.

The Supreme Court will hear the state's appeal against Labour's inclusion in the Cabinet in June and is expected to give its judgement the same month.
