Fiji to host sugar conference

11:58 am on 28 February 2003

Fiji is to host an important ministerial conference of sugar producing countries from the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group.

The foreign minister, Kaliopate Tavola, says the outcome of the conference, to be held in July, will determine the fate of the sugar and other exports from ACP countries to the European Union.

Mr Tavola says the aim is to get international support and solidarity from both ACP member states and the EU.

The conference will focus on the challenge mounted by Brazil and Australia in the World Trade Organisation against EU subsidies for ACP sugar under which they receive several times the world market price.
