Uncertainty over mail delivery to American Samoa

4:33 pm on 20 March 2003

The US Postal Service is still trying to find a mail carrier to deliver mail to and from American Samoa.

Since the company Gemini pulled out of the territory a week ago, there has been no mail flight.

Post Master Smitty McMoore says the US Postal Service is doing its best to find a carrier that wants to deliver mail beyond Hawaii, but is having difficulty finding an interested airline.

Hawaii Air delivers only first class letters and packages but weight is limited. The airline only carries heavier packages from known and approved shippers.

Mr McMoore says about 15-thousand pounds of mail is sitting at Honolulu Airport waiting to be shipped to American Samoa.

He says Guam has also been affected by Gemini's withdrawal.
