Fiji TUC worried government may be attempting to subvert the course of justice

9:08 am on 21 March 2003

The Fiji Trade Union Congress has condemned reports that the government has ordered the military commander to stop investigations into the May 2000 coup and the army mutiny.

The reports said the orders were sent through President Iloilo who is commander in chief of the military.

The TUC general secretary, Felix Anthony, says this a clear attempt to subvert the course of justice.

Radio Fiji quotes Mr anthony as saying the report also questions the independence of the high office of the president.

Mr Anthony says the attorney general had assured parliament that there would be no interference in the investigation and prosecution of those involved in the upheavals of the year 2000.

He says the government must ensure that justice takes its course.

Mr Anthony says people in authority, including the president, will help in nation building and reconciliation if they uphold the rule of law.

The president's office has not responded to the reports.
