Fiji Trade Union condemns reported government interference in mutiny investigations

4:22 pm on 21 March 2003

The Fiji Trade Union Congress says it's not right for the government to interfere in the investigations into the May 2000 coup and the army mutiny

The Congress general secretary Felix Anthony has condemned reports that President Iloilo ordered the military commander to stop the investigations.

Mr Anthony says the attorney general had assured parliament that there would be no interference in the investigation and prosecution of those involved in the upheavals of the year 2000.

He says it's not right for the government to get involved in any way.

"This was upon calls from the Labour Party that government was unduly delaying the supreme court hearing regarding the composition of cabinet. Here we are being told they are quite prepared to represent people who were responsible for the coup but they were not prepared not interfere and hurry up the hearing for the supreme court."
