5:15 am on 26 March 2003

The Solomon Islands government has rejected a Pentagon claim that it supports the United States coalition against Iraq.

A statement from the Prime Minister's Office says it wishes to disassociate itself from the claim and that it continues to support the United Nations and its efforts to address the Iraqi issue.

A spokesman for the US Embassy in Port Moresby says they had been under the impression that the Solomons government had aligned itself with the coalition.

But he says if the government says it hasn't then that is the reality.

The Solomon Islands government also says it wishes to reiterate its continuing support for the global fight against terrorism.
