Plan to combat the decreasing number of sharks in Micronesia

6:20 am on 2 April 2003

A Palau dive company has launched a non-profit foundation that aims to protect sharks throughout Micronesia from being overfished.

The Micronesian Shark Foundation will research shark migration, mating habits, and population numbers.

The co-owner of Fish 'n' Fins, Novat Bornovksi, says that many people know sharks as predators but they don't realise that sharks themselves are increasingly in danger of extinction.

Mr Bornovski says the much-needed research will be used to raise awareness of the need to protect sharks as they migrate throughout the region.
