NZ MP accuses Tonga of hypocrisy over Iraq stance

4:14 pm on 3 April 2003

A New Zealand MP says the Tongan government is hypocritical in supporting the war in Iraq.

Tonga revealed last week that it had backs the group of nations attempting to topple Saddam Hussein.

King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV has pledged Tonga's support for the US-led effort to protect international peace and security and to restore to the people of Iraq the control of their own destiny.

The New Zealand Green Party's foreign affairs spokesman, Keith Locke, says the King should be doing the same for Tongans.

"The King should first off give to the Tongan people control of their destiny, allow democracy to reign in Tonga before trying to support an invasion in another country, supposedly to restore democracy."

Keith Locke.

He also has condemned pressure from Australia and the US applied to Solomon Islands to encourage it to join the Coalition.

Mr Locke says the Solomons are desperate for aid and Australia and the US are cashing in on that.
