Push for more local nurses in Marshall Islands

3:53 pm on 7 April 2003

Health officials in the Marshall Islands says a group of 24 nurse aides who graduated in Majuro last week represent a big step in the Government's efforts to get more local people to take up nursing.

The first group of Majuro Hospital trained nurse aides graduated after six months of training from an Australian volunteer nurse Julie Bellette and the hospital.

The chief nurse Cathy Antolok says the Ministry of Health's aim is to get more Marshallese high school levers to take up health careers.

The aides are being encouraged to continue their education through the College of Marshall Islands, which offers two and three year nurse training programmes.
