Fiji's deputy Speaker makes short court appearance on coup related charges

The deputy Speaker of Fiji's House of Representatives has appeared in court charged with serious coup related offences.

Ratu Rakuita Vakalalabure has been charged with one count of taking an unlawful oath to commit an offence and one count of engaging in a seditious enterprise.

The charges relate to Ratu Rakuita being sworn in as the attorney general in George Speight's failed administration the day after the overthrow of thew Chaudhry government

No plea was taken when the deputy Speaker appeared befor the chief magistrate in Suva yesterday afternoon.

Radio Fiji reports that the case was adjourned until May 8th to allow time for several legal processes to be completed, including getting evidence from the treason trial of coup convicts, Timoci Silatolu and Josefa Nata.
