Desperate Bougainville hospital raising its own funds

4:51 pm on 14 April 2003

Plans are underway for the Buka General Hospital on Papua New Guinea's Bougainville island to raise funds so it can improve its health services.

The hospital is in urgent need of equipment such as an X-Ray machine, biochemistry analysers, a blood bank freezer, an artificial respirator, ECG monitors, an incubator and microscopes.

Money is also needed to buy drugs and pay for power.

Hospital staff say they are looking at raising their own funds as the cash shortage is causing problems in delivering health services to the whole of Bougainville.

The Post Courier says the staff are calling on the government for assistance and for all Bougainvilleans living outside the island in other parts of PNG to support the hospital in any way they can.
