Fiji Court of Appeal president steps down

10:42 am on 18 April 2003

The president of the Fiji Court of Appeal, Jai Ram Reddy, has stepped down from office.

But Justice Reddy will remain a judge of the Appeal Court.

The move comes ahead of his taking up an appointment as a judge of the International Criminal Court on Rwanda which tries cases of genocide committed in that country in the mid 1990s.

Justice Reddy was elected to the court in the first ballot by the United Nations earlier this year.

Justice Reddy had a distinguished legal and political career in Fiji prior to becoming president of the Court of Appeal
