Authorities in New Caledonia are to step up measues against an outbreak of mosquito-borne dengue fever which has claimed eight lives in the territory and affected another 15 hundred people

The government is to intensify media campaigns to raise awareness of the disease and will use planes to spray insecticides to stop the development of mosquito larvae

Health officials in Noumea say the true number of cases could be two to three times higher than the official one thousand, five hundred and sixty confirmed cases of the disease, for which there is no cure or vaccine
