Fiji PM says Labour won't affect government policies

8:19 am on 29 April 2003

Fiji's prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, says even if the Labour Party joins his government, they will in no way affect the running of the country's affairs.

Radio Fiji quotes Mr Qarase as saying he does not want to see his current coalition cabinet compromised for the sake of Labour MPs.

Mr Qarase's comments come ahead of the June sitting of the Supreme Court which will decide on the government's appeal against the inclusion of Labour into the government.

Mr Qarase has previously said he will abide by the court ruling.

But Radio Fiji quotes Mr Qarase as saying that abiding by the court's decision does not require him to support a multi-party cabinet, which, he says, will not work in a country like Fiji.
