PNG upsets China over Taiwan policy

Papua New Guinea has upset the Chinese government over its form of recognition of Taiwan.

The Post Courier newspaper says a statement from the Chinese embassy in Port Moresby expressed concern and opposition to the PNG government issuing consular number plates to the Taiwan trade mission in the country.

The embassy's statement says Taiwan is not eligible to be issued such plates, saying this goes against the One China policy pursued by the PNG government.

This comes at a time when the vice chairman of China's National People's Congress is in PNG.

The PNG government has defended its action, saying to issue such number plates is in line with general practice.
